Avoid Filter Words and Stop Words
You should already know what your keywords and key phrases are (the main words that describe your product or service promoted on your web pages), but did you know you can add weight to these keywords simply by avoiding the use of certain words?
Example 1: optimising web pages
The above three words combine to make a strong key phrase targeting visitors who want to optimise their web pages. This can be easily diluted and weakened by the use of other, lesser words and phrases ...
Example 2: optimising your own web pages
The initial key phrase in example 1 is diluted and weakened by the use of the lesser words ('your' and 'own') shown in example 2.
These are known as 'filter words' and are ignored by most major search engines when used in a search. Whilst you can use filter words within the main body text to make the content flow and read more easily, it is best to avoid using them between your main key phrases.
If your page title or key phrases use filter words, search results will be lower and your pages may be ignored altogether. Known filter words include the following ...
a, about, an, and, are, as, at, be, by, from, how, i, in, is, it, of, on, or, that, the, this, to, was, we, what, when, where, which, with
Additionally, some words can get you banned from search engines altogether. These are known as 'stop words'. Stop words include adult words and phrases or words relating to explicit sexual nature. Some search engines consider keyword stuffing (repeating the same keywords) to be the same as using stop words.
Finding the right density and use of words is also important for good search engine placement. If your keyword density is too high or too low, it will affect your ranking.
