SEO

Keywords and Tags

Website 'keywords' and 'key phrases' play a big part in helping your website get found by the right people when they search for your product or service online.

When a user enters specific keywords to search, if your website contains relative keywords, it will be included in the search results. However, being listed in the results is only truly worthwhile if you are on the first page. To achieve that, you need the right balance of keyword quality and quantity.

Identifying the Right Keywords

When selecting keywords, they should be ...

- relevant to your site
- in common use
- not too broad or too general
- different for each page

Your keywords should be relevant to your website and should be common terminology that someone would actually use to describe your website product or service.

If you make them too broad or too general, you will be competing against millions of search results that may not be what the user is actually looking for.

If you make them more narrow or more specific to your product, they will attract better qualified searches but fewer of them.

You need to find the correct balance of phrases for your website pages.

Example ...
Poldings Ltd provide web hosting services from England, UK.

If a user searches using a very broad phrase such as 'web hosting', it returns hundreds of million results, making our site very hard to find ...
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=web+hosting

However, use a more defined search term such as 'web hosting england' and ours is listed on the first page, making it far easier to find ...
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=web+hosting+england

Selecting the Right Keywords

We recommend you begin by leaning toward the 'specific' end of the keyword scale by using keywords that are specific to your product or service ...

- use keyword phrases that consist of two to four words
- avoid very competitive keywords and phrases
- be specific about your product or service

When searching, most people use keyword phrases between two to four words in length. Single word searches are less commonly used.

Try to be specific with the keywords you target. A broad keyword will attract broad interest whilst a more specific keyword will attract better qualified visitors.

Example ...
If your website sells hand-made wooden toys, don't just focus on 'wooden toys', but consider 'hand-made toys' or 'hand-made wooden toys' as your key phrases. Someone searching for 'hand-made wooden toys' is likely to be closer to placing an order than someone searching for just 'toys'.

Keywords for Key Pages

Your site is likely to have different pages promoting different things. In the same way, change the keyword focus to compliment the subject being promoted on that page.

If you have a page promoting 'Windows Hosting Plans' then make the keywords different from those used on another page that promotes 'Reseller Hosting Plans'.

In order to maximize your website potential, it's important that every single page is unique with no more than 30% repeated content.

Where to Place Keywords

We will cover this in more detail later however, you should take the opportunity to use keywords in all elements of your website pages ...

- header tags: title, meta
- url address and page names
- headline text (H1, H2, etc)
- url links and text links
- image ALT tags
- html comments
- document body text

Remember to make them relevant for each page and to alter them between pages.

Keyword Density

When inserting your keywords and phrases, it's not just a question of fitting as many in as you can, so be careful not to over-use them.

Different search engines have different methods for regarding keywords and there is no single formula that works for them all. Use the following as a guide ...

- construct keyword sentences so they are legible and easy to read
- not all sentences need to have keywords included
- your main keyword should be no more than 4% of page content
- secondary, lesser keywords should be no more than 2% of page content

Competitor Analysis

Find out what keywords your competitors are using. See who is ranked well in the search engines and analyse their site keywords to see how they differ from your own. It's a good idea to do this for a number of your competitor sites in order that you can follow the structure or trend that may be prevalent.
