1 - don't give out your true email address to discussion forums or online chat rooms. Disguise your email as yourname@DELETETHISBITchange-domain.com ... a human will distinguish the correct mail address whilst a spammers' automated net sweeper will send to the full address.

2 - if you really must 'submit your site to thousands for an affordable fee' then don't give out your real address unless you want your inbox flooded with unsolicited mail. Create an alias (submit@) that can be turned on and off whilst submitting your site.

3 - use the email filters within your hosting account. These provide immediate help in eradicating spam. They can never be 100% efficient but they will help.

4 - don't open email you think is spam (not even in a preview window). Just by opening an html email, you can be confirming to the spammer that your address is operational ... and that only encourages them. If you have to open the mail, switch off the connection to the Internet first so the mail can not communicate with a remote location and pass on your details.

5 - avoid using your email address on your website or at least, try to disguise it in some way. Spammers will trawl the net looking for email coding and will harvest your email address. Of course you need clients to contact you however, to deter spambots who harvest for the @ symbol, you can simply replace the @ sign with the html code ...

So, where your html code would normally look like this ...

It can also be written like this ...

6 - don't put your email address in your browser profile settings on your computer. These can be harvested as well.

7 - create a free email address (yahoo, hotmail, other) or create a temporary email address (something@change-domain.co.uk) and use it when signing up for online services, forums or newsletters.
