Domains
Domain name expiry phase
UK Domains (co.uk, org.uk, me.uk, etc)
If a UK domain is not renewed by the due date then it will take 97 days for it to become publicly available for registration. The process of expiry is as follows ...
- 7th day
Nominet will write to let you know the domain needs to be renewed.
- 37th day
The domain will be suspended if renewal has not been made.
- 97th day
The domain will become publicly available for registration.
At any time during the 97 days, you can contact your registrar and have them renew the domain and it will be reactivated within 20 - 60 minutes.
Please note that excessive renewal fees may apply if a late renewal is made.
TLD Domains (com, net, info, biz, etc)
These domains are treated slightly differently. If a domain is not renewed by the due date then it will stop working almost immediately and you will lose access to your hosting and email services straight away.
It then falls into a period during which you can renew it at the normal rate. This period will be anything from 3 to 30 days depending on the domain name.
If a domain is not renewed by the end of it's Primary Renewal Phase then it will fall into an Extended Renewal Phase during which time it may be auctioned, deleted or renewed (subject to the registrar body).
Any renewal in this Extended Phase will come with a premium surcharge that may be as much a 25 times the initial domain cost.
If the domain is not renewed after the Extended Phase then it will be deleted from the system and no longer recoverable and will become available for anyone to register it.
